More Info

Quality beef is seasoned without our usual biltong spice blend or Worcestershire sauce and then slowly air-dried. The result is a clean, savoury biltong in which the natural character of the beef remains prominent.

This product is made without intentionally added gluten-containing seasoning. It contains no added sugar and does not rely on a heavily seasoned spice blend.

Choose sliced biltong for convenient snacking or a whole piece if you prefer to cut it yourself. As biltong is naturally variable, its texture, fat content and appearance may differ slightly between pieces.

If you have a preference for leaner, fattier, softer or drier biltong, please leave a note at checkout. Requests are accommodated where possible but remain subject to availability.

Please note: This product is prepared in a facility that also handles gluten-containing ingredients. While strict hygiene procedures are followed, we cannot guarantee the complete absence of cross-contact, so this product may not be suitable for customers with coeliac disease.

Storing & Preserving

How to Store Your Gluten-Free Biltong

Our Gluten-free Biltong is only seasoned and air-dried, so shelf life is quite short in comparison with cured variants. Like any ready-to-eat meat product, its quality depend on how it is packaged, handled and stored.

Our biltong is sold in brown paper bags or vacuumed for long keeping or transporting abroad. It is best to keep your biltong in a paper bag and avoid refrigerating it immediately as it will dry out quickly. Keep the packet away from direct sunlight, heat and moisture.

Paper bags are better than plastic ones, as they keep the biltong from 'sweating' so it stays dryer for longer. It is a good idea to shake the bag regularly to promote airflow. If your biltong was purchased very wet, do this a few times a day. Try to eat the biltong within a few days, as it does start to dry out.

Can biltong be frozen?

Yes, biltong can be frozen if you are not planning to eat it soon. Freezing is particularly useful when buying a larger quantity that cannot reasonably be consumed after opening. It is best to vacuum pack biltong that is going to be frozen.

Frozen biltong should be thawed in the refrigerator. Once thawed, open the packaging, drain the biltong on a paper towel to remove excess moisture and then store in a paper bag or in an airtight container in the fridge.

Freezing can affect texture and flavour, especially over an extended period.

Our best biltong storage advice for Mauritius

Humidity makes sensible biltong storage particularly important in Mauritius. Keep unopened packets cool, dry and away from direct sunlight. Once opened, refrigerate your biltong, protect it from condensation and enjoy wetter varieties sooner.

And, of course, the easiest way to enjoy biltong at its best is to buy an amount that suits your household rather than storing an open packet for weeks as it will dry out in the fridge.
